Christopher Plummer, the Canadian actor who passed away in February 2021 at the age of 91, was a renowned figure in the world of classical music as well as theater and film. Although he is known primarily for his performances on screen and stage, Plummer had a lifelong love of music and was an accomplished pianist as well.

Plummer's connection to classical music began early in his life. He was born in Toronto in 1929 to a family that appreciated the arts and encouraged their children to pursue creative endeavors. Plummer took piano lessons from a young age and continued to play throughout his life, even performing publicly on occasion.

As he developed his acting career, Plummer found ways to incorporate his musical talents into his work. In 1958, he starred in a Broadway adaptation of the classic operetta "The Sound of Music," playing the role of Captain von Trapp. The role required Plummer to sing several songs, including the iconic "Edelweiss," which became one of his signature pieces.

Plummer's association with "The Sound of Music" continued throughout his career. He reprised the role of von Trapp in a 1965 film version of the show, and in later years he frequently performed concerts featuring music from the production. Plummer even recorded an album of songs from "The Sound of Music" in 2009, titled "Christopher Plummer & Friends Sing The Sound Of Music."

Beyond his work with "The Sound of Music," Plummer also had a deep appreciation for other forms of classical music. He was known to be a fan of Mozart and Beethoven, among other composers, and often attended performances by leading orchestras and soloists. In 1980, Plummer narrated a performance of Stravinsky's "L'Histoire du Soldat" with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, showcasing his talent for spoken word as well as his affinity for classical music.
