Hillie Lyman was a highly influential figure who played an integral role in shaping the theater landscape in the United States during the mid-20th century.

Lyman was born in Wisconsin in 1902 and initially pursued a career as a dancer before transitioning to theater production. She began her career as a stage manager, working on several Broadway productions throughout the 1930s and 1940s. In 1941, she became the executive director of the newly established Theater Guild of America, where she would cement her reputation as a major force in American theater.

Under Lyman’s leadership, the Theater Guild produced a number of groundbreaking plays that pushed the boundaries of what was considered acceptable in mainstream theater. She championed works like Arthur Miller’s "Death of a Salesman" and Tennessee Williams’ "A Streetcar Named Desire," which dealt with themes like mental illness, sexuality, and death - topics that were considered taboo at the time.

Aside from her bold programming choices, Lyman was also a trailblazer when it came to backstage personnel. She was one of the first women to hold a top position in a major American theatrical organization, and she made sure to hire other qualified women and people of color to work on productions whenever possible. This commitment to diversity and inclusion was particularly remarkable considering the times – the Civil Rights Movement wouldn’t begin in full until the 1960s.

In addition to her work with the Theater Guild, Lyman was also an important educator and mentor to young artists. She was a founding member of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, which aimed to bring high-quality theater to audiences outside of New York City, and she helped establish theater programs at several universities across the country. Her legacy lives on in the countless actors, directors, and producers whose careers she influenced over the years.

Hillie Lyman will always be remembered as a visionary leader who fought for artistic freedom and diversity in American theater. Her impact on the industry can still be felt today, and generations of theater artists owe a debt of gratitude to her trailblazing work.
