Nickel Mines is a small community located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It is primarily known for its agricultural industry and as the site of the 2006 Nickel Mines School shooting. However, it also has ties to the world of theater.

In 2007, less than a year after the tragedy, the community came together to create a play titled "Amish Project." The play was written by Jessica Dickey and focused on the aftermath of the shooting and the forgiveness demonstrated by the Amish community. It premiered at the New York International Fringe Festival and later went on to be produced by various theaters across the country.

What made this production unique was that it featured members of the actual Nickel Mines community in the cast. Many of the actors had never been on stage before and were recounting their own experiences of the shooting and its aftermath. The emotional impact of their performances resonated deeply with audiences and helped bring attention to the healing process of the community.

The success of "Amish Project" spurred other theatrical endeavors in Nickel Mines. In 2010, the iconic American actor Hal Holbrook performed his one-man show "Mark Twain Tonight!" at the Nickel Mines Schoolhouse. Holbrook had previously performed the show over 2,000 times across the United States and was interested in bringing his stylized interpretation of Twain’s character to such an intimate setting.

The schoolhouse had been restored after the shooting and the performance served to help raise funds for the ongoing renovation efforts. Holbrook’s show was well-received and brought attention to the resilience of the Nickel Mines community.

In 2018, the Lantern Theater Company in collaboration with the Flea Theater presented another play about the Nickel Mines shooting titled "Off the Grid." The play, written by Bruce Graham, focused on two families – one Amish, one not – who are affected by the tragedy. The play examines themes of forgiveness, loss, and community in the aftermath of a horrific event.

Nickel Mines may be a small community, but its ties to the world of theater have helped it heal and bring attention to the strength of its residents. The theatrical productions that have emerged from this community show that art can be a powerful tool for catharsis and healing.
