Music

On February 1st, the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) Department of Music presented the UTEP Brass Faculty Recital at the Fox Fine Arts Recital Hall. The event showcased the talents of UTEP's brass faculty members: John Carroll and Richard Lambrecht on trumpet, Jorge Gavilanes on horn, and Andrew Gignac on trombone. The performance featured a mix of solo and chamber pieces, showcasing the versatility and artistry of the brass instruments.

Classical music has long been associated with brass instruments, dating back to the Baroque period when trumpet and horn fanfares were commonly used in royal courts. But the UTEP Brass Faculty Recital highlighted the versatility and range of expression possible with modern brass playing, showcasing the instruments' ability to express both the technical precision and emotional depth.

The recital kicked off with a performance of "Sonata for Two Trumpets" by Giovanni Gabrieli, a piece from the late Renaissance era known for its antiphonal style. The two trumpets played in conversation with each other, demonstrating the capabilities of trumpet playing and the complexity that can be achieved with overlapping melodies.

Following this was a solo performance of "Morceau de Concours" by Jules Mouquet, performed by horn player Jorge Gavilanes. This French composer's work explores the warmth and beauty of the horn's lower register and showcases the instrument's lyrical side.

Trombonist Andrew Gignac then took center stage to perform "Elegy for Mippy II" by Leonard Bernstein. Originally written for his brother's trombone-playing dog, the piece is a whimsical tribute to the instrument and showcases the playful nature of brass instruments.

The performance wrapped up with a chamber piece, "Quintet No. 2" by Victor Ewald. The piece demonstrated the cohesive collaboration of the ensemble while also highlighting each instrument's unique sound and role in the quintet.

Overall, the UTEP Brass Faculty Recital gave a fresh perspective on classical brass music, showcasing the technical and emotional capabilities of these instruments. The performers showcased their range as well as their extreme technical ability, while also giving audiences a glimpse into the joys of working together as a collaborative ensemble. It was an impressive display of musicianship and artistry that illustrates the timeless beauty of classical music.
