Theater is a powerful platform for exploring complex topics such as love, loss, and identity. One such play that does exactly this is “A Letter To Harvey Milk.” This acclaimed theatrical piece has made waves in the theater community since its premiere in San Francisco in 2018, and has recently completed a successful off-Broadway run in New York City.

Written by Lesléa Newman (author of the groundbreaking novel "Heather Has Two Mommies"), with music by Laura I. Kramer, “A Letter To Harvey Milk” is based on the iconic real-life activist Harvey Milk. Milk was the first openly gay elected official in California when he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. However, his promising political career was cut short when he was assassinated the following year.

In the play, Harry Weinberg, a retired Jewish butcher, responds to an assignment from his writing class by penning a letter to Harvey Milk. As the story unfolds, Harry reveals the struggles he’s faced regarding his sexual identity, and how he sees elements of himself in Milk’s courage and activism.

As the show progresses, we hear from various other characters including Barbara, Harry’s rabbi; Anita, a fellow member of Harry’s writing class; and Stuart, Harry’s husband. Together, these characters paint a rich and complex portrait of LGBT+ lives and experiences in 1980s era San Francisco.

“A Letter To Harvey Milk” is self-aware of its position as a historical drama, but that doesn’t mean it shies away from contemporary concerns. In fact, the play’s message—about standing up for oneself and others in the face of oppression and hatred—feels just as resonant today as it would have in Milk's time.

The musical numbers peppered throughout the show are poignant and masterfully executed. Through these songs, we gain insight into the minds of the characters and the emotional stakes of their personal journeys. The standout song, “Rainbow Colored Candy," sung by Stuart (played by Adam Heller), Harry’s husband, is a tender and moving tribute to love and loss.

Ultimately, “A Letter To Harvey Milk” is an ode to one of the most important figures in LGBT+ history. However, it is also a testament to the power of theater to bring us together and offer new perspectives on pertinent issues. The play’s run in New York City just goes to show that Harvey Milk’s spirit of justice and inclusion continue to resonate with viewers today – regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
