Albert Ramsdell "A.R." Gurney, Jr. was an American playwright and novelist who is known for his works in theater. Born on November 1, 1930, in Buffalo, New York, he grew up in a privileged society with his family's wealth and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After that, he got his Bachelor's degree from Williams College and a Master's degree in English Literature from Yale University. His experience and education brought him to make a positive contribution to American Theater.

Gurney's work is often criticized as being too old-fashioned and reserved, but it also has been praised for its fresh ideas and perspectives on social issues. In his plays, he frequently examines life in New England and uses humor to explore themes of alienation, technology, and the human condition. He is famous for the portrayal of middle-class white America through his comedic plays such as The Cocktail Hour and Love Letters.

Gurney’s interest in Theater began early, where he wrote plays and skits at college. Throughout his career, he had several notable productions, including The Dining Room (1982), Ancestral Voices (1990), and Sylvia (1995). The Dining Room confronts the dissolution of the American family while highlighting class tension. It tells the story of an upper-middle-class family in their setting of the dining room thematically connected to their essence of living together. Meanwhile, Ancestral Voices reflects the American inheritance concerns of a group of relatives in an inaugural part played in a suburban townhouse in Buffalo, New York, where A.R. Gurney spent most of his childhood. Lastly, Sylvia describes the hilarious story of a couple struggling when the husband brings a dog into their apartment, causing conflict between them.

Gurney's success in literature also extended past plays into novels and short stories. As Heaven Allows, Indian Blood, and The Snow Ball are examples of his best-known works that deal with the same social issues that appear in his plays.

Gurney impacted Theater by bringing an unconventional lens to American upper-middle-class comedies. His humor, combined with an exploration of social issues affecting life in America with fresh eyes, appealed to a wide audience and praised the entirety of his works for their intellect and elevated sentimental value for human relationships.

Gurney's impact on Theater remains even after his death in June 2017. He is credited as one of America's most innovative playwrights whose work paved the way for others to write about social issues in contemporary drama. With his unfaltering critical writing style and humor, he gave rise to a different observation of American life through the theatrical stage where the story is not only told but lived.
