The history of hockey in the Adirondack region dates back to the early 1900s, when several amateur teams played in the area. However, it wasn't until 1979 that professional hockey arrived, with the creation of the Adirondack Red Wings. The team was the AHL (American Hockey League) affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings and won two Calder Cups during their tenure.
After the Red Wings left for Maine in 1999, the Adirondack Frostbite (later renamed the Adirondack Phantoms) took their place in the AHL. In 2014, the Phantoms announced they would be relocating to Allentown, Pennsylvania, leaving the area without professional hockey once again.
However, the following year, the ECHL awarded an expansion franchise to Glens Falls, and the Adirondack Thunder was born. In their inaugural season, the Thunder made it to the second round of the playoffs before ultimately falling to the South Carolina Stingrays.
The Adirondack Thunder play their home games at the Cool Insuring Arena, which has a seating capacity of 4,794. The arena has undergone several renovations and improvements over the years, including the addition of luxury suites, a new video board, and upgraded locker rooms.
One unique aspect of the Adirondack Thunder is their affiliation with two NHL teams. The New Jersey Devils became the team's parent club in 2015, and in 2021, the Ottawa Senators also became an affiliate. This allows for more opportunities for player development and potential call-ups to the NHL.
