AFC Eskilstuna is a soccer club based in the city of Eskilstuna, Sweden. The club was founded in 2005, but only started competing professionally in the lower tiers of Swedish soccer in 2007. Since then, AFC Eskilstuna has had an interesting journey filled with ups and downs.
The club’s first major success came in 2016 when they won the Superettan, which is the second tier of Swedish soccer, thus securing promotion to the top tier, Allsvenskan, for the first time in their history. Unfortunately, their joy didn’t last long as they were immediately relegated back to the Superettan at the end of the 2017 season.
Since then, AFC Eskilstuna has been yo-yoing between the two tiers. In 2018, they finished second in the Superettan and earned their ticket back to Allsvenskan. However, their return to the top tier was short-lived as they once again got relegated at the end of the 2019 season.
In terms of current standings, AFC Eskilstuna is currently in the Superettan and is fighting to regain their spot in Allsvenskan. So far, their 2021 campaign has been disappointing as they are currently sitting in 15th place out of 16 teams with just nine points from 12 games.
Despite their struggles, AFC Eskilstuna has a promising youth academy that has produced several talented players who have gone on to play at higher levels. For example, Alexander Isak, who now plays for Real Sociedad in La Liga and also represents the Swedish national team, started his career at AFC Eskilstuna. This makes the future look promising for the club as they continue to develop young talent.
Overall, AFC Eskilstuna’s journey in Swedish soccer has been a rollercoaster ride filled with both successes and failures. Nevertheless, the club remains resilient and is committed to improving on their current standing in the Superettan. Hopefully, in the near future, they will once again grace the top tier of Swedish soccer and make an impact among the country’s elite teams.
