music

All aboard! Classical music has long been associated with trains, from classical compositions inspired by the steam engine to modern day symphonies performed on moving locomotives. It’s not hard to see why – trains represent a time of adventure, discovery and movement. They symbolize the progression of technology and art – much like classical music.

One of the most famous works inspired by the train is composer Richard Strauss’ “Eine Alpensinfonie” (An Alpine Symphony). Completed in 1915, this epic piece was written to depict a journey up a mountain via railway. It is filled with bold brass accents, thunderous percussion and soaring melodies, all of which embody the power and majesty of a steam engine. Strauss even paves the way for musical interpretation of the train whistle itself through swirling motifs and swirling woodwinds that mimic the sound of the locomotive.

Another well-known composition heavily influenced by trains is “Night Mail” written by Benjamin Britten. This piece was created for use as a background music for a documentary film about the Royal Mail train delivery service of the United Kingdom during the 1930s. The music captures the frantic pace at which the mail is delivered, with the rhythms of the piano mimicking the steady chug of the steam engine and the frantic whistles of the train punctuating the score just like they do in real life.

But it’s not just composers who have been inspired by trains – some musicians have taken this fascination to new heights quite literally! In recent years, a number of orchestras around the world have performed live concerts on trains, taking passengers on a musical journey while traversing landscapes and cityscapes. These performances range from chamber and solo recitals to full-blown symphonic performances complete with choirs and guest soloists. These shows make classical music more accessible to everyday people, bringing it out of grand concert halls and into the world.

The train and classical music have had a long-standing relationship that continues to inspire musicians and composers today. These two art forms share many common themes, such as movement, adventure and forward progress. Both are also steeped in tradition, yet prove to be ever-evolving. They thus remain a perfect pairing in creating an aural experience that transcends time and place. All aboard!
