Born in California in 1956, Carlson began her career in dance in the 1980s after studying theater at the University of California, San Diego. Her early work focused primarily on performance art, but she quickly became drawn to the more physical aspects of dance. She soon began developing her signature style, which combined witty commentary on social and political issues with impressive physical feats.
Throughout the 1990s, Carlson continued to push boundaries in the dance world with a string of critically acclaimed works, including "Sloss, Kerr, Rosenberg & Moore" (1991), "The Dog-Girls of Peru" (1992), and "Tutuguri" (1994). These shows tackled weighty themes such as gender, race, and religion while also showcasing Carlson's impressive choreography and staging.
In recent years, Ann Carlson has continued to be active in the dance world, working on projects ranging from large-scale outdoor performances to more intimate shows in theaters. Her most recent work, "Doggie Hamlet," premiered in 2015 and features a cast of dogs and human performers interacting in a pastoral setting.
Despite her many successes, Carlson remains committed to pushing the boundaries of what dance can be. In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, she explained that she sees herself as "a cultural worker, not just someone who makes pretty steps on stage."
