The team was founded in 1996 by a group of local businessmen who wanted to bring professional hockey to Austin. They hired former NHL player Stan Drulia as their first head coach and began building a roster of talented players from around the country.
The Ice Bats played at the Travis County Expo Center, which had a capacity of around 6,500 fans. The arena was packed for many of the team's home games, with fans cheering on stars like goalie Marty Turco, forward Reggie Savage, and defenseman Steve Bancroft.
Under Drulia's leadership, the Ice Bats quickly became one of the top teams in the CHL. They won their first division title in just their second season, and followed that up with two more divisions titles in 1999 and 2000. They also made it to the CHL finals twice, losing to the Shreveport Mudbugs in 1999 and the Huntsville Channel Cats in 2003.
In addition to their success on the ice, the Ice Bats also became known for their community involvement. The team often participated in charity events and visited local schools to promote hockey and healthy living.
Sadly, the Ice Bats' run came to an end in 2008 when the team folded due to financial troubles. However, their legacy lives on in the memories of their fans and the impact they had on the Austin hockey community.
