Azar Nafisi is an Iranian-American author and scholar who is best known for her memoir "Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books." However, what is lesser known about Nafisi is her love and passion for theater.

Nafisi grew up in Iran where she was exposed to various forms of artistic expressions, including theater. As a young girl, she would perform plays with her family and friends and would often attend the productions at Tehran's City Theater. As she grew older, her interest in theater only intensified, and she began to study drama and theater at the University of Oklahoma in the United States.

Throughout her academic career, Nafisi has consistently pursued her passion for theater. She has taught courses on Shakespearean drama, theories of acting, and contemporary theater studies. In addition, she has written numerous articles and essays on theater and its relationship to society and politics.

One particularly interesting aspect of Nafisi's work on theater is her exploration of how it can be used as a means of political resistance. In an article titled "Staging Resistance: Theater and Politics," Nafisi argues that theater can be a powerful tool for challenging oppressive regimes and advocating for political change.

Nafisi's own experiences in Iran have undoubtedly informed her views on the relationship between theater and politics. During the rule of Ayatollah Khomeini in the 1980s, artistic expression in Iran was heavily censored, and many playwrights, directors, and actors were arrested or executed for their work. Despite this, Nafisi continued to use theater as a way of expressing dissent and challenging societal norms.

Today, Nafisi continues to advocate for the power of theater as a political tool. She remains devoted to teaching and promoting theater to students and scholars around the world, and her work serves as a testament to the enduring importance of artistic expression in times of political turmoil.
