BAUS, or Black Actors in Unison Society, is an organization that has played a crucial role in the growth and visibility of Black actors in theater. BAUS was established in 1968 in response to the lack of representation of Black actors on Broadway and stages across the United States. The organization aimed to provide support for Black actors by creating a community that encouraged collaboration, education, and advocacy.

Through BAUS, Black actors were able to connect with one another, share their experiences, and collaborate on creative projects. This enabled them to build networks that were integral to advancing their careers in the theater industry. Moreover, the organization set out to create opportunities for Black actors to audition, train, and work in the field of theater.

One of the most significant accomplishments of BAUS was its successful lobbying of the Actors' Equity Association to implement "Non-Traditional Casting." Prior to this effort, many roles in theater were restricted to actors based on their race or ethnicity. Non-Traditional Casting stipulated that any actor could be considered for any role, regardless of their race or ethnicity. This opened up more opportunities for Black actors, as well as actors from other marginalized communities to gain access to roles that they weren't typically considered for.

In addition to being a support system for Black actors, BAUS also sought to educate audiences about the importance of diversity and inclusion in theater. They believed that true change would only come when people recognize the value of diversity in all aspects of society, including the arts. In pursuing this goal, the group accepted roles in non-traditional theater spaces, like Off-Broadway theaters and regional theaters outside of New York City. This helped to bring new voices to the forefront and created more opportunities for diverse representation in the industry.

Despite progress made by organizations like BAUS, there is still much work to be done in terms of diversity and inclusion in theater. However, the efforts of organizations like BAUS paved the way for many Black actors to succeed in the industry. Today, there is a growing number of Black actors taking up roles traditionally reserved for white actors and receiving recognition for their work.

In conclusion, BAUS played an enormous role in promoting diversity and inclusion in theater. They provided support for Black actors, opened up more opportunities for non-traditional casting, and helped to educate audiences about the importance of representation. Their efforts contributed significantly to the progress made in advancing diversity and inclusion in the theater industry.
