Benedict College, a historically black college located in Columbia, South Carolina, has a long-standing tradition of athletic excellence. The Benedict Tigers have been a dominant force in numerous sports and have produced several notable athletes over the years.
Football:
The Benedict Tigers football team has a storied history of success on the gridiron. Since its inception in 1923, the team has won over 400 games and numerous conference championships. In recent years, the team has had notable players like cornerback Demetrius McCray who was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2013 NFL Draft.
Basketball:
The Benedict Tigers basketball team has also been successful throughout its history. The Tigers have won multiple conference championships and participated in the NCAA Tournament on several occasions. Big name players include Jody Lumpkin (’94-’98), who played professionally overseas, Nate Curry (’03-’07), who played professionally in the NBA G-League, and Michael Green (’07-’11) who played in Europe for several years.
Track and Field:
One of the most decorated sports programs at Benedict College is track and field. The men’s team has won multiple SIAC Outdoor and Indoor Championships as well as seven NAIA National Championships. The women’s track team also boasts impressive accolades with six SIAC Outdoor and Indoor Championships and three national championships. Notable athletes include Leander McKenzie (’01-‘05) who was a four-time NAIA national champion in the triple jump and Eduardo Garcia (’18-’19) who was an NAIA All-American in the steeplechase.
Golf:
In addition to the other sports, Benedict College has a successful golf program. The golf team has won three SIAC Championships and produced former PGA Tour player Jim Dent.
Overall, Benedict Tigers have excelled in multiple sports and continue to produce talented athletes. The college’s commitment to athletics and academic excellence is evident in the success of its students both on and off the field. Benedict College provides a platform for athletes to showcase their talent and develop into well-rounded individuals.
