Broadway shows have always been a staple in the entertainment industry, bringing people from all walks of life together to experience the magic of musicals and plays. From classic productions like Cats and Phantom of the Opera to modern-day hits such as Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen, Broadway offers something for everyone.

One production in particular that has left its mark on Broadway is Big Fish. Based on the novel by Daniel Wallace and the subsequent film adaptation directed by Tim Burton, Big Fish brings to life the story of Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman who spins tall tales about his extraordinary life to his skeptical son, Will.

The musical made its debut on Broadway in 2013, starring Tony Award-winning actor Norbert Leo Butz as Edward Bloom. The production was directed and choreographed by five-time Tony winner Susan Stroman, with music and lyrics written by Andrew Lippa.

Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, Big Fish made waves in the Broadway community with its spectacular sets and magical storytelling. The Broadway show featured a “spectacular array” of giant butterflies, a cannonball-catching mermaid, and even a giant singing circus elephant, all brought to life through innovative stage craft and stunning special effects.

But beyond its visual spectacle, where Big Fish truly shone was in its themes of family, love, and imagination. While some reviewers found fault with the show's pace and predictability, many audiences were drawn to its heartwarming message of cherishing the people and moments that make up our lives.

Unfortunately, after just three months and 34 preview performances, Big Fish closed on Broadway in 2013. Despite this short-lived run, however, the musical has continued to live on in regional theaters across the United States and internationally, proving that its enchanting story and catchy tunes have staying power.

At the end of the day, perhaps what makes Big Fish so beloved among those who have seen it is its ability to spark our imaginations and remind us of the power of storytelling. As Edward Bloom himself proclaims in one memorable scene: "a man tells his stories so many times that he becomes the stories. They live on after him."

Indeed, the story of Big Fish continues to live on through its legacy on Broadway and beyond, reminding us all to embrace life's adventures and celebrate each chapter of our journeys, no matter how wild or fantastical they may seem.
