Music

Big Night is a 1996 film that tells the story of two brothers, Primo and Secondo, Italian immigrants who own a failing restaurant in New Jersey. The brothers are passionate about food, but their restaurant is struggling to attract customers. In an effort to save the business, they plan a big night to impress a famous jazz musician, hoping that his positive review will bring more customers to their restaurant.

Aside from the obvious culinary theme of the movie, there is also a significant presence of classical music throughout the film. In particular, the use of classical music reflects the inner workings of the characters and adds depth and complexity to the story.

One example of this would be the scene where Secondo (played brilliantly by Stanley Tucci) sits alone in the restaurant, listening to Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, K. 467. The music brings out his contemplative mood as he is struggling with the decision to betray his brother's trust in order to save the restaurant.

Another memorable moment involving classical music is when Primo (played by Tony Shalhoub) prepares his "risotto alla Milanese" while listening to Louis Prima's "Buona Sera." Despite his love for the traditional Italian music of his homeland and his disdain for contemporary American culture, the upbeat rhythm of the song inspires him to create a dish that blends both cultures, highlighting his passion for cooking and his willingness to adapt to new tastes.

The film's climactic scene takes place during a dinner party, where the brothers serve a towering seafood feast in hopes of pleasing the jazz musician and saving their restaurant. During the meal, Puccini's "Nessun Dorma" can be heard playing in the background, underscoring the grandeur of the moment and creating an atmosphere of nostalgia and longing. As the musicians begin to play, the audience is transported to another world, where music and food come together to create a magical experience.

In summary, the use of classical music in Big Night adds depth and richness to its themes of tradition, passion, and culture. The music helps to convey the emotions of the characters, adds a layer of sophistication to the story and elevates the overall atmosphere of the film. Whether you're an aspiring chef or a lover of classical music, this movie is sure to leave you feeling inspired and entertained.
