Jones was born in upstate New York in 1952, and he started dancing at the age of 12. In college, he studied classical ballet and modern dance, and he later became a member of the American Dance Asylum, a modern dance company.
In the 1980s, Jones formed his own dance company, Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, with his partner Arnie Zane. Together, they created numerous works that explored social and political issues, such as racism, AIDS, and sexuality.
One of their most notable works is "Still/Here," which premiered in 1994. The piece incorporated interviews with people living with terminal illness and drew criticism from some who felt that it exploited their experiences. Nonetheless, the work helped to bring conversations about illness and mortality to the forefront of the dance world.
Jones has also choreographed for Broadway productions, including "The Seven," a hip-hop musical adaptation of Aeschylus' "Seven Against Thebes." He has worked with renowned musicians such as Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, and Björk on various projects.
In addition to his choreography work, Jones has also served as an educator and advocate for dance. He co-founded the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company’s Education Outreach Program, which provides workshops and classes to underserved communities.
Jones has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the dance world, including the MacArthur Fellowship (or “genius grant”) in 1994, and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2010.
