Billy B, also known as William Bedsole, was a theater educator and performer who dedicated his life to inspiring children through the arts. He gained fame in the 1980s and 1990s for his energetic and interactive performances that blended music, humor, dance, and environmental messages.
Born in Alabama in 1947, Billy B started his career as a classroom teacher in Miami, Florida, where he taught language arts and theater to elementary school students. He soon realized that traditional teaching methods were not enough to engage and motivate his students, especially those who were disadvantaged or had learning disabilities. In response, he developed a unique approach to theater education that emphasized creativity, participation, and collaboration.
One of Billy B's signature programs was his "Billy B Show," which featured him dressed in colorful costumes and playing various musical instruments while leading the audience in sing-alongs, dances, and games. He used puppets, props, and special effects to teach kids about nature, recycling, conservation, and other social issues in a fun and memorable way. He often performed at schools, libraries, fairs, and museums, as well as on television shows such as "Sesame Street" and "Captain Planet."
Billy B also founded the "Billy B Club," a theater troupe composed of students from different schools who worked together to create original plays and musicals based on current events and historical topics. He encouraged his students to develop their talents, express their ideas, and build self-esteem by taking risks and sharing their work with others. Many of his former students have credited him with changing their lives by giving them a sense of purpose, confidence, and responsibility.
Billy B was recognized for his contributions to arts education by numerous awards, including the National Science Foundation's Excellence Award, the Governor's Arts Award, and the Presidential Citation for Outstanding Service. He passed away in 2008 at the age of 61, leaving a legacy of creativity, joy, and passion for learning.
Today, Billy B's methods and ideals continue to inspire theater practitioners, educators, and parents who seek to engage children through the arts. His belief that every child has the potential to be creative and imaginative, and that theater can be a powerful tool for social change, still resonates with many people who share his vision of a more vibrant and inclusive world. As one of his famous songs goes, "You've got the power, use it wisely, spread the news, save the future. Billy B believes in you!"
