The Yellow Jackets’ athletic programs include men’s and women’s basketball, football, cross country, track and field, golf, soccer, volleyball, and softball. They also offer cheerleading and dance teams, which provide a support system for all of the school’s sports teams.

Black Hills State’s athletic facilities are some of the best in the region, providing athletes with state-of-the-art resources to help them achieve their fullest potential. Facilities include the Young Center, home of the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams, the Lyle Hare Stadium for football and track and field, as well as the Joy (Krai) Krautschun Field and Frost Arena for soccer and softball, respectively.
Although the Yellow Jackets have experienced successes in several sports over the years, perhaps one of their most notable achievements was in 2009 when the women’s cross country team captured the NCAA Division II National Championship. This impressive feat put Black Hills State on the map as a force to be reckoned in the world of NAIA sports.
Another standout athlete hailing from Black Hills State is former NFL player, Roman Phifer. Phifer played for four different teams during his 15-year career, spending time with the New England Patriots, the New York Jets, the St. Louis Rams, and the New York Giants.
Black Hills State University athletics embody a strong tradition of teamwork, tenacity, and perseverance. Their focus on both athletic and academic excellence make the Yellow Jackets a team to watch at every sporting event.
