The Boston College Eagles have a rich tradition in baseball, dating back to their first season in 1859. Over the years, the team has produced many talented players who have gone on to successful careers in the major leagues.

One of the most notable former Eagles is Chris Coste, who played for Boston College from 1992-1995 before signing with the Cleveland Indians as an undrafted free agent. Coste went on to play eight seasons in the majors, most notably as a catcher for the Philadelphia Phillies during their 2008 World Series championship season.

Another former Boston College player who made it to the big leagues is Tony Sanchez. The catcher was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the fourth overall pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, after putting up impressive numbers during his time at BC. He played in parts of five seasons in the majors before retiring in 2019.

In addition to producing talented players, the Boston College baseball program has had plenty of success on the field. The team has won five conference championships and made nine NCAA Tournament appearances. They also reached the College World Series in 1960 and 1961.

The current head coach of the Eagles is Mike Gambino, who took over the program in 2010. Under his guidance, the team has continued to compete at a high level, despite playing in the highly competitive Atlantic Coast Conference. In 2016, they even hosted a regional in the NCAA Tournament, the first time the program had done so since 1967.

But while the team's history is certainly important, what matters most is the present and future of Boston College Baseball. And fortunately for Eagles fans, there is plenty to be excited about. The team features a strong core of talented players, including outfielder Sal Frelick and pitcher Mason Pelio, both of whom are projected to be top picks in next year's MLB Draft.

Of course, like virtually every other sports team in the world, the 2020 season was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Boston College played just 14 games before the remainder of their schedule was cancelled. But despite the shortened campaign, the Eagles showed plenty of promise, with Pelio striking out an impressive 26 batters in just over 16 innings pitched, and Frelick hitting .367 with five stolen bases.

Assuming a full season is played in 2021, there is reason to believe that Boston College could make some noise in the ACC and beyond. With Gambino at the helm and a talented roster that includes several potential future major leaguers, the Eagles are well-positioned for success in the coming years.
