Casablanca is a 1942 American romantic drama film that has become an iconic movie of Hollywood's golden age. The film tells the story of two star-crossed lovers, Rick Blaine and Ilsa Lund, as they navigate their way through the turmoil of World War II. While the classic film never became a Broadway show, it has certainly inspired many productions that share similar themes, characters, and settings.

One of the most famous Broadway shows that have taken inspiration from Casablanca is the long-running musical Les Misérables. Like Casablanca, Les Misérables is set during a time of political unrest (the French Revolution) and centers around a love story between two individuals from opposite sides of a conflict.

Another Broadway show that has borrowed elements from Casablanca is Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific. Although South Pacific is set in WWII's Pacific theatre, its themes of forbidden love, prejudice, and war are similar to those in Casablanca. And like Rick and Ilsa's fateful romance, the romance between Nellie Forbush and Emile De Becque in South Pacific is fleeting and bittersweet.

The 2012 Broadway adaptation of Rebecca also shares similarities with Casablanca. Both stories explore themes of secrets, betrayal, and the power of romantic love. In Rebecca, the narrator falls in love and marries a wealthy man but becomes haunted by the memory of his first wife, Rebecca. Similarly, in Casablanca, Rick is haunted by his past relationship with Ilsa.

Finally, we cannot forget to mention the critically acclaimed Broadway hit Hamilton. Although Hamilton is not set during WWII or in any wartime period, it shares some similarities with Casablanca. Like Casablanca, Hamilton explores themes of sacrifice, loyalty, and self-discovery. Both stories feature flawed heroes who must navigate their way through complex political situations to realize their potential and, ultimately, find redemption.

In conclusion, although Casablanca never became a Broadway show, it certainly has inspired many productions with similar themes and elements throughout the years. Whether it's through Les Misérables, South Pacific, Rebecca, or Hamilton, audiences can experience the timeless magic of Casablanca in many different ways.
