The Catskills on Broadway was a popular venue in the 1950s and 1960s that showcased a variety of comedians who all had one thing in common: they were Jewish. The Catskills region in upstate New York had been a popular vacation spot for Jewish families since the early 1900s, and it was there that many famous comedians honed their craft. Some names you might recognize include Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, Jerry Lewis, and Joan Rivers.

So what made the Catskills such a breeding ground for comedy talent? For one thing, the region was home to countless bungalow colonies (essentially summer camps for families) where entertainers could perform and get paid for their work. It was also a place where immigrants and their children could come together and share their cultural experiences, which often resulted in jokes and comedic stories that became staples of Jewish humor.

In addition to the bungalow colonies, numerous hotels and resorts in the Catskills would hire comedians to perform at nightclubs and dinner theaters. These gigs often paid much better than the summer camps, and could even lead to television appearances or film roles. In fact, many of the famous comedians who got their start in the Catskills went on to have incredibly successful careers both onstage and onscreen.

One particular highlight of the Catskills scene was the "Borscht Belt," which was a nickname given to the numerous Jewish-owned hotels and resorts in the area. These establishments offered everything from nightly entertainment to kosher meals, and were a haven for people looking to connect with other members of their community. Comedians who performed at these venues were expected to be quick-witted and able to connect with the audience on a personal level, which often meant improvising jokes based on the events of the day or the guests in attendance.

While the heyday of the Catskills may be long gone, its influence on the world of comedy is still felt today. Many comedians still incorporate elements of Jewish humor into their routines, and there are even some modern-day entertainers who got their start in the Catskills (such as Jerry Seinfeld). Overall, the Catskills on Broadway served as a key incubator for comedy talent during a time when the world was changing rapidly - and it's still remembered fondly by those who were lucky enough to experience it firsthand.
