The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS) is a world-renowned organization founded in 1969 by Charles Wadsworth. Although widely recognized for its cutting-edge programming of chamber music, the society has also made significant contributions to the world of classical orchestral music.

Unlike a symphony orchestra, which typically comprises over 100 musicians playing large-scale scores, chamber music is written specifically for small groups of instruments, making it more intimate, personal, and thus, complex. While an orchestral work may consist of three or four movements, chamber pieces are generally shorter and more concentrated, requiring an exceptional degree of virtuosity from the performers.

The CMS performances have always distinguished themselves not just by technical excellence but also by their creative imagination. With an insatiable interest in meeting new challenges, CMS has sought inspiration from a variety of sources beyond the well-known works of the classical repertoire.

Despite the challenging task, CMS's partnerships with various orchestras have been responsible for both the proliferation and refinement of American chamber music. Their collaborations have amplified the richness and depth of musical expression, delighting audiences worldwide.

One of their most iconic collaborations was with Orchestra of St. Luke’s in 1974, where together they performed the Streichquartettsatz by Schubert. In 1991, the collaboration reached great heights with a month-long festival called "The Mozart Celebration," featuring select works by Mozart and his contemporaries played by both ensembles.

In 2004 CMS and the New York Philharmonic premiered John Adams’ “On the Transmigration of Souls,” which won the Pulitzer Prize for music the following year. And in 2013, CMS debuted the "Forward Festival," showcasing the best contemporary composers of our time to critical acclaim.

Although CMS performances straddle a wide array of music styles, periods, and genres, preserving the classic masterpieces and nurturing the future classics remains at the core of their philosophy. Today, Lincoln Center continues to be a vibrant cultural hub where patrons can savor CMS performances and pursue musical growth.

Whether in New York or their numerous international tours, CMS's enduring search for new challenges and elevating the craft of musical interpretation has made them a leader in the world of chamber music – and a cherished partner of classical orchestral music.
