Charles Krauthammer was a prominent political commentator, intellectual, and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer. However, many may not know that he had an active interest in the world of theater as well. Krauthammer’s love for words and ideas led him to be both a consumer and creator of stage productions.

Krauthammer was born in New York City but grew up in Montreal, Canada, where he attended McGill University. It was here where he first discovered his love for theater. During his college years, Krauthammer became heavily involved with the campus theater community, even directing several productions himself. After graduation, he moved to Oxford, England, where he studied political philosophy at Balliol College.

After completing his education, Krauthammer focused on his writing career, working for various publications such as The Washington Post and TIME Magazine. However, throughout his professional life, Krauthammer remained interested in theater and often wrote about it in his columns. He believed that theater was one of the most powerful forms of storytelling and that it had the power to communicate complex ideas in a way that other mediums could not.

Krauthammer also dabbled in playwriting himself. In the early 2000s, he co-wrote a play titled “The Point of It All” with his friend and fellow writer Peter Rosenblatt. The play explored themes of morality, religion, and politics through the lens of two competing ideologies, liberal democracy and radical Islamism.

Despite his love for theater, Krauthammer rarely attended plays due to his physical limitations. In 1972, Krauthammer was paralyzed from the waist down after a diving accident during a vacation in Cape Cod. Despite this, he never let his disability stop him from pursuing his passions, including theater.

Krauthammer passed away in June 2018 at the age of 68. Throughout his life, he remained an advocate for free speech and the power of ideas to change the world. His legacy lives on not only through his writing but also in the plays he wrote and the impact he had on the theater community. Krauthammer was a true intellectual who appreciated the power of theater to bring people together and spark meaningful conversations.
