Chess The Musical is a rock opera that tells the story of a chess championship between two grandmasters during the Cold War era. It premiered in 1986 in London and later made its way to Broadway. The musical was written by Tim Rice (known for his contributions to Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita) with music by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus of ABBA fame.

Chess gained a lot of attention during its time, mainly because it featured an impressive score and standout performances from its cast. However, Chess had its share of challenges: it struggled at the box office, and as a result, it closed after only two months on Broadway - far behind other well-known shows which achieved long runs like Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables.

The Chess score was released before the show hit the stage, and many of the songs became hits on their own right, especially "I Know Him So Well," sung by Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson, which reached number one on the UK charts in 1985. "One Night In Bangkok" also became widely popular, climbing to number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the U.S.

Despite it’s short run, Chess still has enjoyed success and has left a lasting mark in musical theatre history. The show was revived several times in the West End and spawned numerous productions worldwide. The last notable revival occurred in 2018, with a limited, one night engagement at the Kennedy Center, featuring Ramin Karimloo, Idina Menzel, Adam Pascal, and Josh Groban.

One significant aspect of how Chess differs from many other Broadway musicals is its central focus on the music. The songs are more than just supporting compositions- they carry much of the weight in driving the narrative forward. Critics have embraced the show's tuneful score over the years, even when the story hasn't quite clicked with them.

In conclusion, Chess The Musical was a unique contribution to the Broadway stage. Despite its flawed storyline and box office challenges, it will always be remembered for its rock star composer team, compelling score, and ability to engender pride in the art of chess.
