Born in Salzburg, Austria, on May 29, 1966, Clemens Hagen developed a passion for playing the cello at a young age. He began studying at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg with his older brother Gerhard and Heidi Litschauer. Later, he continued his studies with William Pleeth in London and Heinrich Schiff in Vienna.

Hagen has since made a name for himself as one of the world's most renowned cellists, with performances at major concert halls including the Berlin Philharmonic, Symphony Hall in Boston, and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. He also regularly performs as a soloist with orchestras around the world.

The quartet was formed in 1981 and is made up of Hagen and his two brothers, violinist Lukas and violist Veronika, along with Rainer Schmidt, a violinist who joined in 1987. Together they have recorded over 50 albums, including complete recordings of Beethoven's string quartets, which are regarded as some of the finest interpretations of this repertoire.

Throughout his career, Hagen has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to classical music. He has won numerous awards, including the prestigious Echo Klassik and was awarded the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art. He is also a professor at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, where he has trained and influenced many young cellists.
