The Cavs' journey began in 1970 as an expansion team. With the likes of Bingo Smith, Austin Carr, and Nate Thurmond, the team struggled to find success in their early years, posting only a single winning season in their first ten years of existence.
It wasn't until the arrival of LeBron James in 2003 that the team found a ray of hope. During his seven seasons with the team, James led the Cavs to five playoff appearances, culminating in an NBA Finals appearance in 2007. However, the team was defeated by the San Antonio Spurs in four games.
After James departed for Miami in 2010, the Cavs underwent a period of rebuilding, drafting talented players like Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson. In 2014, they selected Andrew Wiggins with the first pick in the draft, who they later traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Kevin Love.
In 2015, James returned to Cleveland and joined a revamped team that included Love and Irving. The team made it to the NBA Finals that year but were defeated by the Golden State Warriors in six games.
It wasn't until the 2016 NBA Finals that the Cavs finally reached the mountaintop. Facing off against the Warriors again, the Cavs became the first team in NBA Finals history to come back from a 3-1 series deficit to win the championship, delivering Cleveland its first major sports title in over half a century.
The following years were tumultuous for the Cavs, as they struggled to keep their core players healthy and on the court. Irving demanded a trade and was sent to the Boston Celtics, leaving James to carry the load for the team.
After James' departure to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018, the Cavs have undergone another rebuilding period. The team has focused on acquiring young players like Collin Sexton and Darius Garland and has hired a new head coach, J.B. Bickerstaff.
As of the 2021 NBA season, the Cavs are once again struggling to find their footing in the Eastern Conference. But with a promising young core and strong leadership from general manager Koby Altman, the future looks bright for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
