Clifton Hall, a stunning and historic building located in Nottinghamshire, England has become well-known in recent years for its connection to the world of comedy.

Constructed in the mid-18th century as a private residence, Clifton Hall has undergone numerous transformations over the years. After serving as a school and military hospital during times of war, it eventually became a venue for events such as weddings, conferences, and parties.

However, it was in 2013 that Clifton Hall gained notoriety amongst comedy fans worldwide. It was selected as the filming location for the popular UK television series “Drunk History”, which tells historical stories through the eyes of inebriated comedians.

In the show’s fourth season, the episode titled “Legends” featured several hilarious retellings of local Nottinghamshire legends including the famous ghost story of Clifton Hall. Comedians Tom Rosenthal, Seann Walsh, and Rob Beckett participated in the episode, each sharing their unique perspectives on the eerie tale.

The ghost story itself is centred around the tragic fate of Lady Maud Clifford, who is said to have thrown herself out of a window in the hall's Great Chamber after her husband was executed for treason in 1322. Her ghost reportedly still haunts the property today.

Aside from “Drunk History,” Clifton Hall has also served as the backdrop for other comedic productions. In 2017, comedian Romesh Ranganathan filmed scenes for his BBC sitcom “The Reluctant Landlord” at the venue.

While Clifton Hall may be best known as a wedding venue and filming location for popular TV shows and movies, it has undoubtedly cemented its place in history with its contribution to the world of comedy. The combination of the hall’s awe-inspiring architecture and rich history makes it the perfect location to evoke both fear and hilarity among those who visit.
