The Columbus Destroyers were an indoor football team, which had been part of the Arena Football League (AFL) and had played its home games at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The team was owned by Jim Renacci and was founded in 2004.

The AFL, which had been created in 1987, was known for its unique indoor-style of play where high-scoring games were the norm, and the rules allowed for a more freewheeling game with fewer stops than traditional outdoor football. The Columbus Destroyers played in the Eastern Division of the league.

The Columbus Destroyers had some success in their brief history in the AFL, making it to the playoffs several times. However, the team was never able to win a championship. Despite this, the team was beloved by its fans in Columbus and had built up a loyal following during its time playing at Nationwide Arena.

One of the most memorable moments in the history of the Columbus Destroyers came in the 2007 season when they played in the arena football championship game, known as the ArenaBowl. Unfortunately, the Destroyers lost that game to the San Jose SaberCats, but the team's appearance in the championship game helped draw attention to the team and the city of Columbus as a football destination.

Unfortunately, the Arena Football League would eventually suspend operations due to financial struggles, and the Columbus Destroyers played their final game in July of 2008. However, the team's legacy lives on, and the team remains an important part of the football history of Columbus, Ohio.

In 2019, the team was revived for a new iteration in the National Arena League. Despite the initial excitement surrounding the return of the Columbus Destroyers, the coronavirus pandemic halted the season after only one game. However, there is hope that the team will continue to be a staple of indoor football in Columbus and build upon the foundation laid by its predecessor in the AFL.

While the Columbus Destroyers may not have enjoyed sustained success on the football field, they nevertheless remain an important part of the city's history and culture. The team provided football fans with a unique brand of indoor football, and its loyal following is a testament to the love that the people of Columbus have for their sports teams.
