Copa MX, also known as the Copa Corona MX due to a sponsorship deal with Grupo Modelo's Corona brand, is a Mexican soccer tournament that features teams from Liga MX and Liga de Ascenso (second division). It is one of the oldest tournaments in the region, dating back to 1907, and has had various formats throughout its history.

In recent years, the Copa MX has undergone several changes to become more relevant to fans and teams. The tournament used to be played during the early months of the season, but it was moved to the second half to avoid overlapping with other competitions such as the CONCACAF Champions League.

Moreover, the Copa MX now includes all Liga MX teams and nine members from the Liga de Expansión MX, which was created in 2020 by merging the Liga de Ascenso and Liga Premier. This format allows smaller teams to compete against top-flight opponents and gives them an opportunity to achieve glory and possibly qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League.

The tournament consists of two phases: the group stage and knockout rounds. The group stage comprises of 27 groups of three teams each, with each team playing two matches. The winners of each group plus the best six runners-up advance to the knockout round, which is single elimination with no away goals rule.

The winner of the Copa MX qualifies for the Campeón de Campeones match against the winner of the Liga MX Apertura and Clausura championships. This game is considered the Super Cup of Mexican soccer, and it is played at the end of the season.

The Copa MX has provided some memorable moments in Mexican soccer history. For instance, in the 2015 Apertura edition, Puebla defeated Chivas on penalties after coming back from a 2-0 deficit. It was Puebla's first major title in over two decades, and it showed how unpredictable the tournament can be.

Similarly, in the 2019 Clausura edition, Necaxa defeated Cruz Azul in the final to lift the trophy for the first time since 1995. Necaxa had been struggling in the Liga MX that season, but they found their form in the Copa MX and created a Cinderella story that will be remembered for years.

In conclusion, the Copa MX is an essential tournament in Mexican soccer that allows teams from different leagues to compete against each other and showcase their talent. Although it may not have the same prestige as the Liga MX or the CONCACAF Champions League, it has its place in the hearts of Mexican soccer fans as a tournament full of surprises and unforgettable moments.
