Doc Severinsen, born Carl Hilding Severinsen in 1927, is best known for his work as the leader of the NBC Orchestra on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” from 1967 to 1992. But he is also an accomplished trumpeter who has been a fixture on the concert scene for decades.

Severinsen began playing trumpet at age seven and went on to study at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. He gained early fame as a member of the big bands led by Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman.

After several years on the road with various bands, Severinsen settled in Los Angeles and began to carve out a career as a freelance musician. He soon became one of the most sought-after studio players in Hollywood, appearing on countless film scores and television shows.

But it was his work on “The Tonight Show,” which he joined in 1962 as a regular member of the band, that made him a household name. The show’s host, Johnny Carson, took a liking to Severinsen’s flamboyant style and often bantered with him on the air.

Severinsen’s popularity on “The Tonight Show” helped raise his profile as a solo artist. He recorded several albums under his own name, showcasing his virtuosic trumpet playing and eclectic taste in music.
