Down & Derby is a popular term that refers to roller skating events where participants skate in a circle format. Although it has nothing to do with horse racing, the term "down and derby" is often misinterpreted as an ode to horse racing culture. The sport of roller derby first came into existence in Chicago during the 1930s when Leo Seltzer began putting on roller skates contests for his promotions business. But how did the term 'Down & Derby' get associated with horse racing in the first place?

The origin of the term seems to be lost in time; however, one theory is that it's from a race called the "Darby," which was named in honor of the Earl of Derby in England. The Darby was a horse race competition held annually as part of the Epsom Derby Festival that brought together members of aristocracy from across Europe, United States and Australia. Over the years, the term "down and derby" began being associated with horse racing fans who would come dressed up in their finest derby hats and colorful clothing.

The association between horse racing and roller skating emerged in Kentucky, where the two events were held at the same venue. In 1941, a roller skating rink purchased Churchill Downs - a famous horse racing track in Louisville, Kentucky. With ownership of both venues, the rink operator, Messers Elmer J. Winter, and Edward J. Welch, decided to combine the events to attract more spectators to both sports. They converted the infield of Churchill Downs to a skating rink, put a retractable roof over it, and began holding skating events during the off-season of horse racing.

In the late 1940s, people started using the phrase “down and derby” to describe the combination of horse racing and roller-skating events that were held at similar venues across the country. However, there wasn't a formal connection between the two activities until the mid-1950s. At that point in time, horse racing and roller-skating were both at their peak of popularity, and it was only natural to bring them together.

Since then, Down & Derby events have become a popular pastime across America, with many participants coming dressed in colorful attire to pay homage to the Derby festival. Today, roller derby is a full-fledged sport with its own rules and regulations, while horse racing remains one of the most popular sports in America.

While the exact origins of the term remain a mystery, it is clear that Down & Derby has become a cultural phenomenon that ties together two seemingly disparate activities. Whether you're a horse racing fan or a roller derby enthusiast, you can certainly appreciate the unique way that these two pursuits have been combined to create the fun, excitement, and nostalgia that is Down & Derby.
