Over the years, Drogheda United has had its ups and downs, with periods of success punctuating long stretches of mediocrity. The club has won the League of Ireland once, in 2007, and the FAI Cup twice, in 2005 and 2012. They have also won the Setanta Sports Cup, a cross-border tournament involving teams from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, twice, in 2006 and 2007.
One of Drogheda United's most successful seasons was in 2005, when they reached the final of the UEFA Intertoto Cup, an annual competition for teams that did not qualify for Europe via their domestic leagues. Despite losing to Dutch side PAS Giannina in the final, this achievement marked a high point in the club's history.
The club's fortunes have been somewhat mixed in recent years; following their league triumph in 2007, they were relegated from the Premier Division in 2012, only to bounce straight back up in 2013. However, they were relegated again in 2018, finishing bottom of the division.
