Born in Cleveland Ohio, EJ Cox began his journey in theater when he first directed a play in high school and immediately fell in love with it. His passion led him to pursue a Bachelor's Degree at Western Reserve University in Drama. After college, Cox moved to New York to pursue his career in theater, but instead, ended up serving in the Military. This hiatus from theater proved fruitful for him as he got exposed to diverse cultures which he later on incorporated into his works.

Upon discharge from the military, Cox became an associate producer at the Cleveland Playhouse. During his eight years there, he built relationships that would influence his career positively. He realized that a successful production should be a collaboration between actors, directors, designers, technicians, and producers. Cox then moved to Cincinnati where he became the managing director of the Playhouse in the park. His tenure there paved the way for impactful productions that drew sizable audiences while entrenching a legacy of professional production processes.

After eleven years in Cincinnati, EJ. Cox was appointed Executive Director at Syracuse Stage in New York. At Syracuse, Cox created a home for professional stage performances by constructing Soundstages and opening the theater doors to productions from Broadway in New York City and other notable places. This bustling environment proved fertile ground for fostering revolutionary ideas that redefined theatre's paradigm within upstate new York.

Cox's impact on the theater world extends beyond stage productions since he also had a heart for nurturing new talents emerging within the industry. Throughout his career, he dedicated countless hours to mentoring aspiring actors, and as a result, many people now in the industry thank him for their success. Many productions he had directed have won awards at local, state, and national levels.
