In fact, Gilbert started out as a playwright in the 1990s, when she was still a struggling writer living in New York City. Her play Pilgrims was produced in 1997 at the Hudson Guild Theater in Manhattan. The play explored the theme of soul-searching and personal growth, themes that would come to define much of Gilbert's later work.
After Pilgrims, Gilbert continued to pursue her writing career. She wrote several short stories and novels before finally hitting it big with Eat, Pray, Love in 2006. However, even after her massive success as a writer, Gilbert maintained her ties to the world of theater.
In 2010, Gilbert co-created a play called The Last American Reading, which was performed at LaGuardia Performing Arts Center in New York City. The play was a satirical look at the state of American culture, featuring readings from classic literature interspersed with commentary from contemporary figures such as Oprah Winfrey and Paris Hilton.
