Ferdinand is an animated comedy movie about a gentle bull who prefers flowers and peacefulness over bullfighting. The film was released in 2017 by Blue Sky Studio, the same studio behind other iconic movies such as the Ice Age franchise and Rio.

One of the hallmarks of Ferdinand as a comedy is its wit and humor. The movie cleverly juxtaposes the expectations of the audience with the reality of Ferdinand's character. From the opening scene where we see all male calves jumping around like typical bulls when they hear cheering from people watching bullfights, to Ferdinand sitting alone smelling flowers, it quickly establishes the comedic tone of the film.

Moreover, Ferdinand also employs situational comedy throughout the story. When Ferdinand accidentally smashes into a bee hive, he frantically tries to escape the swarm by running through a china shop, causing chaos in his wake. This scene not only highlights Ferdinand's clumsiness but also the unexpected consequences that arise when animals interact with human-made objects. Another instance of situational comedy is when Ferdinand has to pretend to be a fierce and aggressive bull to impress other bulls during training. His attempts at roaring or pawing the ground like a traditional ferocious bull are hilariously awkward and out of character.

The film also uses parody and irony in a few instances. During Ferdinand's journey to rescue his friend from the slaughterhouse, they pass by Ronda del Toro, a fictional Spanish town built around bullfighting. The town square is decorated with life-size statues of famous bullfighters, including one clearly modeled after Ernest Hemingway. This sequence sends up the romanticizing of bullfighting by tourists and Hemingway's own penchant for dramatic masculinity. Similarly, the bullfighter who confronts Ferdinand in the arena is comically inept, slipping on his cape multiple times and eventually getting carried away by the bull himself.

Despite relying heavily on humor, Ferdinand does not shy away from themes of animal cruelty, friendship, and loyalty. It's a heartwarming story about the importance of being true to oneself while accepting others who are different, all packaged neatly in an entertaining family-friendly film.

In conclusion, Ferdinand is a successful comedy because it uses various types of humor throughout the story, from witty dialogue to situational comedy and parody. The film strikes a balance between light-heartedness and more serious themes, making it a movie that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
