Dance is not just about executing movements and steps, it is an art form that can express emotions and tell stories. Throughout the years, there have been many dance shows on TV that showcase various styles of dancing. And behind these shows are the choreographers who bring the movements to life, often with the help of talented dancers. Today, we take a look at five first ladies of dance in relation to dance shows.

1) Debbie Allen: She started her career as a dancer before transitioning to choreography and direction. Allen was the principal choreographer for the popular TV show Fame, which followed the lives of performing arts students. Her iconic choreography for the show helped bring modern dance to mainstream audiences. Allen also served as a judge on So You Think You Can Dance.

2) Paula Abdul: The former Laker girl become famous first as a choreographer. She choreographed numerous music videos for top artists like Janet Jackson, Madonna, and George Michael. Abdul then became a judge on American Idol and later, The X Factor. Her keen eye for detail and technical expertise helped guide young talent on their journey to fame.

3) Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker: The Belgian choreographer became a force in contemporary dance and was one of the first women to achieve international acclaim in this often male-dominated field. She has choreographed for multiple companies and ballets around the world but is best known for creating the choreography for Beyoncé's music video "Countdown."

4) Mary Murphy: Murphy is best known for her role as a ballroom dance instructor and expert judge on the Emmy-award winning series, So You Think You Can Dance. Before becoming a household name on TV, Murphy was a highly successful ballroom dancer herself.

5) Mia Michaels: As a contemporary choreographer, Michaels has created some of the most memorable routines on So You Think You Can Dance. She is known for pushing boundaries, pushing her dancers to their limits, and creating deeply emotional pieces. Michaels' work has been seen in films like Step Up and on Broadway in Finding Neverland.

These five women have made an indelible impact on the world of dance through their innovative choreography, passion for movement, and mentorship of young talent. Whether it's choreographing music videos, leading ballet companies, or teaching ballroom dance, these first ladies of dance have proven that there are no limits when it comes to expression and artistry. They serve as role models and an inspiration to future generations of dancers and choreographers alike.
