Florida Southern College (FSC) opened its doors in 1883, but it was only from the early 60s to late 80s that its baseball team had some of their most dominant seasons under the direction of head coach Hal Smeltzly. Under Coach Smeltzly’s watchful eyes, the Moccasins won 1,230 games, lost 604, and tied seven. They also won ten NCAA regional titles, four NCAA Division II championships, and 22 Sunshine State Conference Championships.
Dan Fleckner took over as the head coach in 1990, and he too coached the team for a successful twenty-year span before retiring in 2010. He came to FSC with collegiate coaching experience at Western Michigan and the University of South Carolina and then used his experience to help shape the Florida Southern baseball program into one of the nation’s best.
The FSC baseball program has been around since 1955, and they have a long history of producing talented players who would go on to play professionally. Former Moccasins to note include MLB pitcher Mike Marshall and Cesar Cedeno, who played 17 years as an outfielder in the the majors. Wally Moon, born George Wallace Moon, was another notable former player, who went on to hit .295 across twelve major league seasons. Moon was a three-time MLB All-Star and was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
FSC’s alumni page boasts that “over 150 of Florida Southern’s baseball players have gone on to professional careers,” and today, we see this legacy still continuing. Last year, the Moccasins added Cody Burgess to the growing list of former FSC players playing in the MLB. Burgess played for the Moccasins from 2010-2014 and is currently an outfielder in the Detroit Tigers organization.
Florida Southern Baseball has been a diamond on campus since 1955, but it also has been a hallmark of success for the Florida Southern community as well. Legend youth programs, coaches, and talented players all have come from interacting with this historic program. Its continued success ensures that it will continue to be a beacon for those looking to find greatness within our national pastime.
