Music

"Django Reinhardt and classical music may seem worlds apart, but in truth the legendary gypsy guitarist's oeuvre is deeply influenced by the classical tradition," writes music critic Mike Telin.

Reinhardt, born in Belgium in 1910, began playing guitar as a young boy. Years later, his life changed when he discovered jazz and the music of American greats like Louis Armstrong. Along with violinist Stéphane Grappelli, Reinhardt formed the Quintette du Hot Club de France, which quickly became one of the hottest acts of the 1930s and '40s.

But while Reinhardt is often associated with jazz, his music was enriched by a variety of influences, including classical music. He frequently incorporated elements of classical music into his style, borrowing from composers like Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin.

One notable example of this fusion is "Nuages" ("Clouds"), a haunting melody that has become one of Reinhardt's most famous compositions. The song begins with a slow, melancholy refrain, with Reinhardt's guitar gently tracing a series of chords. As it progresses, the piece builds to a climax, with Reinhardt's virtuosic runs incorporating elements of classical technique.

Reinhardt's use of classical ideas wasn't limited to "Nuages." Throughout his career, he demonstrated a willingness to experiment with different styles and techniques, blending together disparate elements to create something entirely new. His music is characterized by a fluid, improvisational approach that keeps listeners on their toes.

It's perhaps fitting, then, that Reinhardt remains beloved by fans of both jazz and classical music. His fusion of these two seemingly incompatible genres speaks to the power of music to transcend boundaries and bring people together.

As musician Wes Montgomery once said, "Django has been an inspiration to a lot of guitarists who not only play jazz, but play other types of music, too. His influence on musical genres has been so great that no one can honestly say they haven't borrowed from him in some way."
