The fruity-flavored malt liquor came onto the scene in 2005, and soon became a staple of college party culture. With its high alcohol content and cheap price point, Four Loko quickly gained notoriety as a party drink that could easily take you from buzzed to blackout.
But in 2010, a spate of hospitalizations caused the FDA to ban the original formula. The new, lower-alcohol version of Four Loko hit shelves shortly thereafter, and for a while, it seemed like the wild days of the Four Loko-fueled party were over.
However, in recent years, Four Loko seems to have undergone something of a renaissance. Though it still comes in the same neon-colored cans, this new generation of Four Loko is different in several ways. For starters, the alcohol content is capped at 14%, just above the average wine. And rather than relying solely on caffeine to achieve its signature energy-boosting effect, Four Loko now includes taurine, a common ingredient in energy drinks.
But perhaps the biggest change to Four Loko has been its newfound acceptance among comedians. Whether it's because they appreciate the irony of drinking such an uncool beverage or simply because it helps them loosen up before a show, Four Loko seems to have become a favorite among the comedy set.
Comedian Kyle Kinane praises Four Loko in his 2012 album "Whiskey Icarus," calling it “Liquor Gatorade,” and describing the feeling of being drunk on Four Loko as “being held back by somebody who is screaming ‘Run!’" Comedian Dave Attell also gave a shout-out to Four Loko in his 2013 special "Road Work," joking that it would be the only thing he’d require in his green room.
While Four Loko may never regain its status as the ultimate party drink, it seems that the brand has found a new audience among comedians. Perhaps there is something intrinsically funny about drinking a beverage that was once so controversial and has now been rebranded as a sort of ironic joke. Or maybe, in the end, all that matters is that Four Loko is still as cheap, sugary, and potent as ever.
