Owens’ career began as a disc jockey in his hometown of Mitchell, South Dakota, where he developed his signature style of delivering jokes in between songs on the radio. In 1961, he moved to Los Angeles and worked for radio stations before landing his big break as a regular cast member on the hit television show “Laugh-In” in 1968. Owens quickly became one of the most popular cast members on the show, thanks to his droll humor and comic timing.
With his effortless charm and impeccable timing, Owens also became known for his ability to improvise and ad-lib on stage. He was notorious for talking back to hecklers in the audience, shutting them down with his clever comebacks and quick wit.
Over the years, Owens became a staple on the stand-up comedy scene, performing at clubs and venues around the country. He also made numerous appearances on other television shows, including “The Gong Show,” “The Hollywood Squares,” and “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.”
Owens’ comedic talent extended beyond the world of stand-up and television, and into the realm of voiceover work. He lent his distinctive voice to countless animated shows and films, including “Roger Ramjet,” “Garfield and Friends,” “The Powerpuff Girls,” and “Dexter’s Laboratory.” He also provided narration for several documentaries and commercials throughout his career.
Despite his enormous success, Owens remained a humble and gracious performer throughout his life. He once said, “I don’t think of myself as a star. I’m just a guy with a good job.”
Sadly, Gary Owens passed away in February 2015 at the age of 80. But his legacy in the world of comedy lives on, and he remains a beloved figure among fans and fellow performers alike.
