George Blades was an American professional boxer who had an illustrious career in the early 20th century. Born on October 11, 1884, in Youngstown, Ohio, Blades began his boxing career at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the most successful boxers of his time.

Blades was known for his remarkable skill and speed in the ring. His impeccable footwork and powerful punches made him a formidable opponent, and he was feared by many of his competitors. He stood at just 5 feet, 7 inches, but he packed a punch that belied his size. Blades was known for his left jab and his ability to counterattack, making him a difficult boxer to beat.

Blades began his professional career in 1906 and quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with. In his early fights, he showed his dominance over his opponents, winning most of his bouts by knockout or technical knockout. This impressive win record earned him the nickname “The Youngstown Giant.”

Blades’ biggest moment came in 1913 when he faced off against Joe Jeanette, a renowned African American heavyweight boxer. The two boxers went head to head in a historic fight that lasted 31 rounds. Despite sustaining serious injuries in the fight, Blades was able to come out victorious, cementing his place in boxing history.

Throughout his career, Blades fought some of the best boxers of his time, including Sam Langford, Harry Greb, and Jack Dillon. He retired from boxing in 1922 after suffering a loss to Tommy Gibbons. During his career, he amassed an impressive record of 102 wins, 8 losses, and 6 draws, with 64 of those wins coming by way of knockout.

After retiring from boxing, Blades continued to stay involved in the sport. He became a boxing referee and even served as the President of the Ohio Boxing Commission. Blades was also inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2002.
