George R.R. Martin is an author who is best known for his epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, which was later adapted into the hit TV show Game of Thrones. While many fans know him primarily as a novelist and screenwriter, few are aware of Martin's longstanding connection to theater.

Martin began his career as a writer in the late 1970s, where he gained attention for his science-fiction stories published in magazines such as Analog Science Fiction and Fact and The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. But even before that, Martin was involved in theater. In fact, his first professional sale was a one-act play that was produced at a New York City theater in 1971, when Martin was just 22 years old.

Through the 1970s and 1980s, Martin continued to write plays and work in theater. He turned down a job offer from Marvel Comics in the early 1980s to serve as the director of a regional theater company in Dubuque, Iowa, where he oversaw all aspects of productions and got hands-on experience with everything from costumes to set design.

Although Martin eventually shifted his focus to novels and television, his love for theater never faded. In fact, many of his works have elements of drama that could translate well to the stage. For example, his novella The Skin Trade, about a private investigator who specializes in supernatural cases, was optioned for a TV adaptation in the 1990s, but the project ultimately fell through. However, Martin has said that he still hopes to see it adapted for the stage one day.

Despite his success as a novelist, Martin has occasionally returned to theater throughout his career. In 2007, he premiered his play The Pillowman in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The play tells the story of a fiction writer who is interrogated by police about the gruesome murders described in his stories. The Pillowman was a commercial and critical success, receiving rave reviews and helping to cement Martin's reputation as a versatile writer.

More recently, in 2019, Martin contributed a new one-act play to the collection Texas Twelve Plays. His work, titled "The Glass Flower," focused on the relationship between two sisters who are struggling to process their father's recent death.
