Gerard Schwarz is considered to be one of the most influential conductors in modern classical music. Born in Weehawken, New Jersey in 1947, he has led some of the world’s most renowned orchestras and conducted countless concerts across the globe.

Schwarz began his musical career as a trumpeter, studying at both the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music. He joined the American Brass Quintet in 1966 and stayed with the group for five years. However, it was his experience as a conductor that truly set him apart as a musician.

Throughout his career, Schwarz has held posts at various orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. However, he is perhaps best known for his association with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. He served as its music director for 26 years, overseeing its growth into one of the country’s premier symphonic ensembles.

During his tenure, Schwarz transformed the Seattle Symphony into a crowd-pleasing powerhouse known for its innovative programming and outstanding musicianship. He was credited with bringing new life to the classics while also championing contemporary composers, commissioning more than 50 new works from living composers.

Under his leadership, the Seattle Symphony undertook numerous international tours and made dozens of acclaimed recordings. Schwarz’s attention to detail and commitment to excellence did not go unnoticed. He was awarded numerous accolades during his time in Seattle, including a Grammy Award for Best Classical Album.

Schwarz may have retired from his post in Seattle, but he remains a much sought-after guest conductor. He has worked with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Czech Philharmonic. Audiences continue to be enthralled by his artistry and passion for music.

Though Schwarz is no longer in charge of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, his legacy lives on. He is credited with helping to put the group on the map and turning it into a cultural cornerstone of the Pacific Northwest. As long as there are concerts to be conducted, Schwarz will remain one of the most influential figures in modern classical music.
