Gerhard Staebler was a German composer and music theorist, born on January 6, 1949, in Frankfurt am Main. He is known for his unique approach to composition, which blends elements of classical music with experimental techniques. Staebler's works often include extended vocal techniques, unconventional instrumentation, and unconventional notations that challenge traditional ideas about how music should be created and performed.

Staebler’s approach to music began in the late 1960s when he became interested in the avant-garde movements that were sweeping the art world. He studied at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart, where he developed an interest in using non-traditional methods of creating music. This led him to become a pioneer of the "new simplicity" movement, which sought to find new ways of creating music that was accessible to a wider audience while still being intellectually challenging.

Staebler's work often blurs the lines between music and sound art. He has been known to incorporate found sounds and field recordings in his compositions, and he also creates pieces that are intended to be performed in unusual settings, such as public spaces or outdoor venues.

One of Staebler's most groundbreaking works is "Ensemble-Art — Einklang I," which was composed in 1973. It consists of a group of performers playing various instruments and using their voices to create a structure that is both musical and visual. The piece has no specific rhythm or harmony and instead relies on the performers' ability to communicate with one another through sound.

Staebler is also well-known for his vocal works, which often use extended vocal techniques such as whispering and whistling to create unique textures and sounds. In his piece "An einem Tag im Frühling," for example, eight singers whisper a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke while percussion instruments provide a rhythmic background.

Staebler's influence on classical music cannot be overstated. His work challenged traditional notions of what music should be and brought new ideas and techniques to the genre. Today, his legacy lives on in the many composers and performers who continue to explore the boundaries between classical music and experimental sound art.
