George Gershwin is a name that is synonymous with American Jazz and popular music. His compositions of “Rhapsody in Blue”, the musical “Porgy and Bess” and many other songs are still enjoyed by people all over the world today. But did you know that Gershwin’s influence extended beyond the world of Jazz and popular music and into the realm of classical music?

While it’s true that Gershwin was not trained as a classical musician and had no formal education in classical music, his work was greatly influenced by the great composers of his time such as Debussy, Ravel, and Stravinsky. Gershwin appreciated the complexity and richness of classical music and he saw it as an integral part of his own artistic vision.

One of his most famous works, “Rhapsody in Blue” premiered at New York’s Aeolian Hall in 1924 and was an instant success among both audiences and critics. It was hailed as a masterpiece both for the way in which it fused jazz with classical music, and also for its sophisticated orchestration. The piece, which is over 15 minutes long, begins with a solo clarinet that sounds like a wailing train whistle, followed by a lush and lyrical melody played by the orchestra. These two themes are united through complex harmonies that merge the worlds of Jazz and classical music in a unique and compelling way.

Gershwin’s opera “Porgy and Bess” is another example of how his work transcended the boundaries between popular and classical music. The music includes elements of Jazz, spirituals, and blues but is presented on the grand scale of an opera. Its professional performance tradition began on Broadway, but “Porgy and Bess” was later considered one of America’s finest operatic achievements both because of its music, themes and characters.

In addition to these works, Gershwin’s compositional style was also evident in his concert music and forays into ballet. He wrote the “Concerto in F” for piano and orchestra, which is notable for its quick tempo changes that dance between classical refinement and Jazz spontaneity. Gershwin’s “American in Paris” is another masterful piece that blends classical music with popular sounds.

Gershwin’s influence on the world of classical music continues to this day. Whereas he inspired orchestral notables like Leonard Bernstein and Eugene Ormandy back then, now ensembles around the globe regularly include Gershwin’s works as part of their standard repertoire. It’s clear that Gershwin had a profound impact on both the popular and classical music worlds during his short life. His legacy shows the power and universality of great music, regardless of genre classifications.
