The GFNY (Gran Fondo New York) Malaysia 2017, held on January 22, marked the first time the event was held in Southeast Asia. The inaugural race saw over 600 cyclists from around the world compete in a challenging course that started and finished at Johor Premium Outlet.

For those unfamiliar with Gran Fondo races, it is an Italian term meaning "Big Ride." Essentially, it is a long-distance cycling competition that tests endurance, skill, and mental fortitude. The GFNY series, which began in 2011, has since become one of the premier cycling events globally, attracting thousands of cyclists to its various locations each year.

The Malaysian leg of the race covered a distance of 160km, passing through towns and scenic countryside along the way. The course included two significant climbs, one of which was a 12km ascent up Gunung Pulai, a hill that rises to over 650m above sea level. Riders were also faced with technical descents, sharp bends, and several flat sections where wind resistance played a significant factor.

Despite the challenges, the atmosphere at GFNY Malaysia was exciting and energizing. The route was well-marked, and the marshal team did an excellent job ensuring the participants' safety throughout the event. With water stations also located strategically every 20km, riders could take moments to rehydrate and refuel before getting back on the saddle.

For the competitors, the race presented an opportunity to challenge themselves against like-minded individuals. With the option to ride in either an open or age group category, cyclists of all abilities could participate. Supporters also added to the fun of the day, with family and friends lining the roads to cheer on their loved ones.

Besides offering riders an exhilarating experience, GFNY Malaysia also supported a charitable cause. The organizers partnered with Padiberas National Berhad (Bernas), a rice marketing brand, to contribute to the B40 Food Aid campaign. The initiative aimed to provide basic necessities such as food and groceries to underprivileged families in Johor.

With its successful first year in Malaysia, GFNY will undoubtedly see an increase in participants for subsequent races. Cyclists from all over will continue to seek new challenges, testing themselves against demanding courses and pushing their limits like never before. GFNY Malaysia highlighted yet again that sports bring people together regardless of cultural backgrounds, breaking down barriers one event at a time.
