GFNY Uruguay 2018: A Thrilling Adventure for Sports Enthusiasts
Sports enthusiasts in Uruguay were in for a real treat on November 4, 2018, as the sixth edition of the GFNY (Gran Fondo New York) cycling race was held in Punta del Este. The event attracted athletes from all over the world and presented them with a challenging 162-kilometer course that tested their limits and pushed them to excel.
In case you are not familiar with the GFNY, it is a series of international cycling events that originated in New York City in 2011. The Gran Fondo concept combines the best elements of competitive racing and recreational cycling, offering riders of all levels the opportunity to compete against other cyclists while also experiencing some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world.
The GFNY Uruguay 2018 race started at the iconic Punta del Este lighthouse and took the riders through the countryside and coastal roads, showcasing the stunning natural beauty of the region. The route featured some challenging climbs and descents, making it a true test of endurance and courage.
One of the highlights of the race was the climb up to the La Zanja hill, which required contestants to ride uphill for about 6 kilometers with an average gradient of 10%. Riders who succeeded in completing this section were rewarded with a scenic view of the rolling hills and lush vegetation of the area.
Another memorable part of the race was the famous “Garzón Bridge,” one of the symbols of the area’s history and architecture. This unique bridge was built by the famous architect Rafael Viñoly and spans the Garzón River, connecting the towns of José Ignacio and Rocha. Crossing the Garzón Bridge was a challenge in itself, with its steep incline and narrow lanes testing the nerves and skills of the riders.
Overall, the GFNY Uruguay 2018 was an exciting adventure for sports enthusiasts, featuring a challenging course, stunning scenery, and great camaraderie among the riders. The race brought together athletes from Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, United States, and other countries, creating a truly international atmosphere.
The winners of the race, Juan Pablo Dotti from Argentina in the men's category and Cecilia Colledge from Great Britain in the women's category, both expressed their admiration for the GFNY Uruguay race, praising its organization, hospitality, and beauty.
