The Ghana Women's National Football Team, popularly known as the Black Queens, had a campaign to forget at the 2014 FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada. The team was drawn in Group A alongside hosts Canada, Netherlands, and China PR.

The Black Queens opened their campaign on June 8th against the United States, the reigning Olympic champions and one of the tournament favorites. Despite putting up a brave fight, Ghana suffered a 2-0 defeat to the Americans. Four days later, they faced Germany, the eventual winners, and were battered 1-0.

Their final group stage game came on June 17th against Portugal, a match they needed to win to have any chance of reaching the knockout rounds. However, the Black Queens slumped to yet another defeat, losing 2-1 to finish last in the group and exit the competition without registering a single point.

On a positive note, striker Asamoah Gyan became the first African player, male or female, to score in three successive World Cups when she netted Ghana's solitary goal against Portugal. Her strike also secured her place in the history books as the first African woman to score at a World Cup.

The Black Queens' performance at the 2014 World Cup exposed the need for more investment and resources in women's football in Ghana. Unlike their male counterparts, who have qualified for three consecutive World Cups and reached the quarterfinals in South Africa 2010, the women's team has struggled to make an impact on the global stage.

However, there have been some encouraging signs since then. In November 2018, Ghana hosted and won the inaugural Women's WAFU Cup of Nations, beating neighbor Cote d'Ivoire 1-0 in the final. This victory marked a significant step forward for the Black Queens, who had failed to win a major international trophy before then.

In conclusion, while the Ghana Women's National Football Team endured a forgettable campaign at the 2014 World Cup, they have shown signs of improvement in recent years. With the right investment and support, the Black Queens could become a force to be reckoned with on the world stage.
