HaHas for Hurricane Relief: How Comedy Can Help in Times of Crisis
Natural disasters such as hurricanes can devastate entire communities, leaving people without homes or basic necessities. In recent years, we have seen the most powerful hurricanes ever recorded cause widespread destruction, leaving millions of people in need of assistance.
While some may think that humor has no place in such serious situations, the power of laughter and comedy should not be underestimated. As comedian Charlie Chaplin once said, “Laughter is the tonic, the relief, the surcease for pain.”
In line with this sentiment, many comedians have used their platform to help raise funds and bring attention to hurricane relief efforts. The HaHas for Hurricane Relief campaign, launched in 2017, was a perfect example of the positive impact comedy can have in times of crisis.
The campaign brought together some of the biggest names in comedy, including Sarah Silverman, Hasan Minhaj, and Kevin Hart, to raise money for disaster relief organizations. Through live performances and online streaming events, the campaign raised over $500,000 for various charities working to assist those affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria.
But it’s not just about raising funds – comedy can also provide a much-needed escape from the stress and hardship of dealing with a natural disaster. It allows people to let go of their worries, even if just for a moment, and find some joy amidst difficult circumstances.
Comedian Tiffany Haddish visited Houston, Texas in the wake of Hurricane Harvey and held a free comedy show for residents at a local church. Haddish, who had lived through homelessness herself, understood the importance of providing moments of laughter in situations of crisis.
“At times like these, you’ve got to laugh to keep from crying,” she said in an interview with CNN. “We need every reason to laugh right now and have that hope restored.”
Additionally, comedy can serve as a way to spread awareness and encourage people to take action. Comedian Marc Maron, who has his own podcast called WTF with Marc Maron, interviewed John Fugelsang, a comedian and activist, about the hurricane relief efforts taking place in Puerto Rico. The conversation led to Maron making a personal donation and encouraging his listeners to do the same.
In summary, while natural disasters are incredibly serious and can bring immense hardship, it’s important not to underestimate the power of positivity and laughter. Comedians have shown that humor can be an effective tool for raising funds, providing relief, and serving as a much-needed distraction from the difficult circumstances that arise during and after a hurricane.
